Fibre to the Premises

Whilst every effort has been made to make this post as accurate as possible, it is possible there are small mistakes and I’d recommend you check the providers sites to see their latest prices.

As you probably know, Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) finally arrived in Hinxworth during August 2019 and now villagers have the choice between ADSL*, 4G, FTTP and Wireless**.

If you’re looking to upgrade to FTTP, it’s a little more complicated in terms of ordering a package than ADSL.

First of all, you need to decide if you want a router provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or you would like to use your own equipment. If you want to use your own equipment, it needs to be PPPoE capable.

Next you need to decide how long a contract you want. The contract lengths vary between 12 and 24 moths.

You also need to consider if you want to keep your telephone line. FTTP does not require a telephone – it’s a separate dedicated fibre optic cable line and most providers will not charge line rental for the fibre optic cable line.

And finally you need to decide what speed package you require. I’ve gone for an 80Mbps download / 20 Mbps upload package (aka. 80/20) which is more than capable of streaming 1080p internet TV. If you have teenage kids, you might be better off with a 330/50 connection to allow multiple TVs to stream TV at the same time.

Here’s a list of all the providers I’ve found that offer FTTP in Hinxworth and an example comparison package price:

ISPProvides RouterComparison package
80/20 £p/m***
Installation £***Contract length

Andrews & Arnold LtdYes£40.00£10012
AquissNo£34.00FREE12
BTYes£37.99£9.9924
Cerberus NetworksYes£49.80Free if 24 month contract, otherwise £48.0012 or 24
fibre.netYes£43.00£96.0012
IDNETNo – can order at extra cost£45.60£60.0012

spectruminternetYes£37.99£49.0024
STRUCTURED COMMUNICATIONSYes£44.99£60.0012
ZenYes£38.99£55.0018

The table above only lists some of the differences between the different providers. The two other key differentiators are a telephone line (which may cost extra for line rental) and whether the provider gives a static IPv4 address. The static IPv4 address is useful for establishing a VPN connection into your house or for hosting a website at home.

More providers are expected to start offering FTTP in the new year, e.g. Sky, TalkTalk and Vodafone.

For reference, I’ve chosen to go with Aquiss# as I already own equipment for connecting to an FTTP package and I required a static IPv4 address.

* Some providers have stopped selling new ADSL connections and it’s a matter of time until you can’t order a new connection or switch provider.

** Wireless internet is provided by Voneus
